About My Photography by Nigel Wallace-Iles

Nigel Wallace-Iles loves history; all subjects of history, from the ancient Greeks to WWII. However, his main interest for photographic purposes is the medieval era. The noise and sounds, the smells, the feel, the food and ale....and the people!

It is this love of this very colourful era in our history that allows Nigel to capture the very essence of the medieval period, be it simply cooking or standing around, to the clash and clang of steel in the heat of battle. Nigel is not just any old photographer who happens to like medieval events. This is what he does as a full time career. During festival season, from early spring to late autumn, you can find him at any one of the numerous medieval events throughout the country (and Europe) getting stuck in to the action and meeting with the re-enactors afterwards for an ale or two!

Nigel's images are used by many different groups, organisations, societies and by the re-enactors themselves. They are also used for commercial purposes where appropriate copyright releases are required.

"I love being able to capture images of these events and people and to be a part of it. I have had an enormous desire to be involved with medieval events and history for as long as I can remember. Visiting castles was all I wanted to do as a child, and that desire hasn't stopped. Being in a castle and touching the very same walls that a king or a knight, or an armourer or a squire had, several hundred years ago, is like being able to touch the very history itself and connect with it."

Photography is what Nigel does now.

He hasn't always been a photographer.

He was a soldier, and then a geologist.

He was excellent at both of those careers.

So far, he's not bad at being a photographer!

He lives near Reigate in Surrey and is married to his beautiful wife, Helen. He has three fantastic stepsons, Christopher, Dominic and Aidan, and his little sweetheart Isabelle, his daughter.
